In December 2022, Enfarm Agritech launched and began deploying its Enfarm Smart Nutrient Monitoring System, a cutting-edge solution integrating IoT and AI technology. This system simultaneously evaluates four key components: Soil, Water, Crops, and Fertilizers, providing precise measurements of soil nutrient content. The system helps farmers: Optimize fertilizer application and irrigation; Improve crop care, resulting in increased productivity and higher-quality yields; Reduce production costs; Minimize environmental impact. To date, 100 households in the Central Highlands and Southeastern regions of Vietnam have adopted Enfarm’s technology in their agricultural practices, experiencing significant benefits in their farming operations.

Part 1

Starting background of the project

According to data from Vietnam's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the fertilizer utilization rate in the country is alarmingly low, at just 40%. This means 60% of fertilizer is not absorbed by crops, resulting in an annual loss of approximately 60 trillion VND. This inefficiency contributes to soil degradation, water pollution, and the release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

In his work on regional planning, Mr. Nguyen Do Dung observed that most farmers rely solely on experience rather than data-driven methods for cultivation. Farmers are left to navigate agriculture alone, facing risks such as crop failure due to unfavorable weather and market price volatility. Motivated by these challenges, Mr. Nguyen Do Dung collaborated with Mr. Ho Long Phi, an expert in water resource management and climate change, to establish Enfarm Agritech. Their mission is to leverage Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to develop a smart nutrient monitoring device. Their vision is threefold: Enhance farmer incomes through optimized resource use. Protect the environment by reducing waste and mitigating pollution. Create a sustainable agricultural ecosystem that integrates technology and innovation. By empowering farmers with precise data and practical solutions, Enfarm Agritech aims to revolutionize agriculture in Vietnam and beyond.

The Enfarm nutrient monitoring system consists of three key components: Soil sensor, Data measurement and transmission device, Enfarm mobile application.

This innovative system measures critical soil parameters such as N-P-K levels, temperature, moisture, pH, and electrical conductivity (EC). Based on this data, it analyzes conditions and offers tailored farming recommendations, including irrigation, fertilization, and soil improvement strategies.

Advantages of Enfarm over existing solutions:

- High accuracy: Comparable to laboratory soil testing results, but at a fraction of the cost, with real-time data updates.

- Actionable insights: Goes beyond raw data by providing practical recommendations for crop care.

- Localized design: Developed specifically to suit Vietnam's unique soil conditions.

- User-friendly: Features a Vietnamese interface and an intuitive design tailored for easy use by farmers.

By combining affordability, accuracy, and ease of use, the Enfarm system empowers Vietnamese farmers with cutting-edge technology to improve productivity, reduce costs, and promote sustainable agriculture.

Goals and vision of the project

Goals

In 2024, Enfarm Agritech aims to expand its technology application to one to two additional crops, such as bananas and dragon fruits, with a focus on the South Central Coast and Central Highlands regions. By 2025, the company plans to extend its reach to the Mekong Delta.

Vision

Enfarm strives to bring its products into practical use and drive transformational change in Vietnam's agriculture. The company's vision is to improve the lives of over 63 million Vietnamese farmers through technology, contributing to global food security and minimizing environmental impacts.

Looking beyond Vietnam, Enfarm aspires to support farmers in developing countries worldwide, creating a product with global influence and impact. By addressing the dual challenges of enhancing farmers' livelihoods and fostering sustainable agricultural development, Enfarm commits to its mission and future vision of shaping a more prosperous and sustainable agricultural sector.

Implementation - Scope - Cost of the project

Launched in December 2022, the Enfarm Smart Nutrient Monitoring System has been rolled out across households in the Central Highlands and Southeast Vietnam. This system was developed to address poor fertilizer efficiency, which leads to waste and environmental pollution.

One major challenge was identifying the issues farmers face and understanding their expectations. To address this, Enfarm built a research team combining expertise in agriculture and technology. Founder Nguyễn Đỗ Dũng personally dedicated extensive time visiting farmers, working alongside them, and engaging in conversations to deeply understand their struggles.

Producing hardware posed significant challenges as agriculture and hardware manufacturing are not commonly integrated within the tech startup ecosystem. With IoT manufacturing in Vietnam being relatively small and underdeveloped, it was difficult to create high-quality products. Enfarm tackled this by adopting a learn-as-you-go approach and collaborating with partner manufacturers to design affordable and user-friendly devices.

Sustaining operations has been a persistent challenge due to limited funding. The rollout process demands substantial resources for marketing, training, and influencing behavioral change among farmers while earning their trust. Farmers' limited purchasing power and skepticism towards new practices further deter potential investors. To keep the company afloat, Nguyễn Đỗ Dũng has tirelessly appealed to investors and even sold his own house to fund Enfarm's mission.

Despite these hurdles, the dedication and passion of the Enfarm team remain unwavering as they work towards transforming Vietnam's agricultural sector.

Achievements

Beyond assisting farmers in making precise crop decisions, Enfarm's technology provides added value, notably by helping farmers reduce fertilizer loss. Thanks to this technology, up to 90% of the fertilizer applied is absorbed by crops rather than being lost, leading to healthier plant growth, higher yields, and improved farmer income.

Moreover, the Enfarm app guides farmers on soil improvement with an organic approach by monitoring soil pH levels. This supports environmentally friendly soil and water management, reduces pollution, and promotes sustainable livelihoods.

Model expansion potential

Smart fertilization has opened a major door for Enfarm in the agriculture sector. Leveraging their developing technology, Enfarm aims to create a complete ecosystem for farmers.

Enfarm not only guides farmers on optimal fertilization practices but also aims to supply high-quality fertilizers tailored to the specific nutritional needs of each farm. Looking forward, Enfarm envisions supporting agriculture beyond input provision by offering financial assistance and securing market access for agricultural products.

An essential service Enfarm plans to provide is certification, ensuring that crops are grown on non-deforested land, certifying organic and clean produce, and ultimately helping farmers earn income from carbon credits—an emerging opportunity in agriculture's future.
